Columbus Zoo is Shaping its Future with a Bold 2040 Vision

As the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium approaches its 100th anniversary, it stands at a defining moment in its history. Building on its successes from the last 50 years - new exhibits, advances in animal care, strong visitation and donor support, and the addition of Zoombezi Bay and Safari Golf Club – the zoo is now poised for even greater growth, setting the stage for an ambitious new era.

Since stepping into his role in 2021, President and CEO Tom Schmid has worked with his team to develop a bold new 2040 Framework vision to guide innovation, conservation, and expansion. As part of this vision, the zoo is prioritizing:

  • Creating state-of-the-art exhibits and year-round guest experiences

  • Developing a world-class conservation institute based in Ohio

  • Establishing itself as a premier regional and national destination

"We’ve always been focused on delivering an incredible experience for our guests, and that’s been a key driver of our success," says Schmid. With annual attendance reaching 2 million visitors—on par with zoos in much larger cities—the Columbus Zoo has a strong foundation for ambitious expansion.

Aligning All Properties Under a Unifying Vision

While the next 15 years will introduce new projects and initiatives, the Columbus Zoo’s commitment to conservation, education, and sustainability is already deeply embedded across all its properties.

  • Zoombezi Bay generates revenue that directly supports wildlife conservation efforts.

  • The Audubon-certified Safari Golf Club models sustainable land management practices.

  • The Wilds, one of the largest conservation centers of its kind, leads efforts in bison restoration, habitat preservation, and immersive guest experiences.

These properties are integral to the Columbus Zoo’s broader mission, ensuring that conservation efforts extend beyond its gates and into real-world impact.

New Projects to Fuel the Next Era

With a clear roadmap for the future, the Columbus Zoo is actively investing in transformative projects that align with its vision. The highly anticipated North American Trek, set to open this summer, will feature cutting-edge animal habitats and immersive guest experiences. Meanwhile, new lodging opportunities—both at the main zoo and The Wilds—will offer visitors unparalleled connections with nature while supporting conservation initiatives.

"We’re not just a zoo. We’re creating a destination that inspires, educates, and drives conservation efforts on a global scale," says Schmid.

Through strategic leadership and an unwavering commitment to innovation, the Columbus Zoo is turning vision into action. As it enters its second century, it remains dedicated to redefining what a modern zoo can be—one that creates transformational experiences for millions of visitors while leading the charge in conservation, education, and sustainability for generations to come.
